Vice President’s Award for Service

The Vice President’s Award for Service is an annual award that recognizes outstanding students at the University of Miami. They exemplify the characteristics of integrity and dedication through exceptional, committed, and unassuming participation in community service activities.

Award Description and Recognition

The Vice President’s Award for Service was established in 1991 to recognize members of the student body, faculty, and staff for extraordinary service to the greater Miami community. Today, the award annually recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated service and involvement on campus and in their communities. Nominees and the recipients of the award will be recognized and announced at the Celebration of Involvement Reception on Thursday, April 24, 2025  in the Shalala Student Center Grand Ballroom from 4pm-6pm.

Nomination Criteria

In order to be considered eligible for this award, nominees must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Nominees must be a current full-time senior undergraduate student at the University of Miami who will be graduating in the Spring, Summer or Fall of 2025.
  • Nominees must have demonstrated extensive participation in community service activities which benefited the campus, local and/or community.
  • Nominees should have assisted in developing or organizing projects which address community service, social, political, or economic issues affecting the local and/or global community.
  • Nominees should have demonstrated leadership through policy-making or serving as an advocate for social change.

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations may be submitted by faculty, staff, and students at the University of Miami. Qualified nominees will be notified via email of their candidacy status and will be given the opportunity to accept or decline their nomination. A committee composed of selected faculty, staff, and students will review the applications and interview the eligible nominees to determine the award recipient.

Additionally, nominators must respond to the following items in the sections below or in an optional letter of recommendation. 

  1. Explain how long and in what capacity you have known the candidate.
  2. List any community service honors or awards received.
  3. List the nominee’s service contributions while at the University of Miami. Please emphasize the activities completed through the Division of Student Affairs, specifying the dates and length of service. If other significant activities took place outside of the University of Miami, please include a brief two to three sentence description of each volunteer activity.
  4. Describe how the nominee’s service involvement has contributed to the improvement of campus or the surrounding community.

All materials must be submitted at the same time. A completed nomination  will consist of the following: a completed nomination form, a copy of the nominee’s resume, the responses to the above questions, and one (1) additional optional letter of recommendation.
